In the world of autism, there are 3 levels which range from minor to severe.
Each person with autism has either Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3.
As you’ve probably guessed, Level 1 is the least severe, and Level 3 is the most.
Here is a breakdown of each level:
- Level 1 – This is the lowest form of autism. Those on this level will require some support to assist them with social interaction issues and lack of organization and planning skills.
- Level 2 – This is the mid-range level. These people generally require substantial support and have issues that are more obvious to others, such as verbal communication, restricted interests, and frequently exhibiting repetitive behaviors.
- Level 3 – This is on the most severe end of the spectrum, which requires maximum support. These people often display characteristics of Level 1 and 2, but far more severely and are often accompanied by an array of other complications too. They will often have a limited ability to communicate and socially interact with others.
The three levels of autism help doctors to prescribe appropriate therapies for the specific needs of their patients. These therapies can help the person improve their social, language, and behavior skills.
For parents of a child with autism, knowing which level your child has can help prepare them for the types of challenges they might face in their daily lives.
All levels of the autism spectrum can benefit from ABA therapy.
